Blaine has lived most of his life in Northern Manitoba where he has been a commercial fisherman, musician, educator, poet, chef, snowshoe maker and snowmobile repairman. Blaine started to write for Loon Books Publishing because as an early childhood educator, he realized that it was important for children in the North to have books that were relevant to them. "It's twice as hard to learn to read when children have to first decode the culture in the pictures and stories. Children need stories and illustrations that reflect their own everyday experiences. "
